Overview

The Asphalt Penetration Tester is an instrument designed using advanced capacitive digital dial indicators combined with CNC circuitry to measure asphalt penetration. This instrument complies with the People’s Republic of China’s transportation industry standard JTG 3410–2025, “Test Procedures for Asphalt and Asphalt Mixtures in Highway Engineering” — “Asphalt Penetration Test.” It is simple and convenient to use, requires no preheating, and provides a high‑precision, state-of-the-art instrument for applications in highway, municipal, construction, petroleum, and other related fields in China.

Uses

This instrument is primarily used to determine the penetration of viscous road petroleum asphalt, liquid petroleum, asphalt, and asphalt materials after distillation or emulsification tests, as well as their residues.

Use of the Instrument

1. Introduction to the Instrument Operation Panel

“Set” button: Sets the descent time. Press the “Set” button to display the descent time on the screen; then, press the “Start” button to increase the descent time by 1 second, or press the “Manual” button to decrease the descent time by 1 second.

“Manual” Key: In the test interface, pressing this key activates the electromagnet that locks the needle rod, causing the needle rod to lose its secure lock and release.

“Lighting” button: Press once to turn the lighting on, then press again to turn it off.

Operating Procedures

1. Adjust the needle penetrometer to ensure it is level.

2. Fill the glass constant‑temperature water bath with water to about the level of the glass bath opening, then place the water bath on the chassis platform.

3. Transfer the specimen that has reached the required constant temperature to the triangular support in the glass water bath, slowly adjust the height of the displacement sensor bracket, install the standard needle of the penetration tester so that the needle tip just touches the surface of the specimen, then press the start button to begin the test; the instrument will automatically complete one penetration cycle.

4. After completing the three trials, take the average of the three sets of test data as the test result.

5. The instrument is set to a curing temperature of 25°C and a penetration time of 5 seconds.

6. After each test, the instruments must be cleaned and dried promptly.

Notes and Precautions

1. Before each test, the water temperature in the保温 dish should be checked and adjusted. After the test, the installed standard needle should be removed and cleaned with cotton or cloth soaked in a solvent (benzene or gasoline); then wipe it dry with cotton or cloth and store it in a dry place.

3. To ensure safety, please use a power supply with a ground wire.
